Björkö is, together with Hönö, the largest of the Öckerö islands and the one with the most green areas. It is an island with a long and rich history. The community has its center in Skarvikshamnen on the west side and then extends into the island. You can still imagine how the fishermens and farmers built their large, beautiful houses to keep the fields and pastures free. Some of the remaining old farm environments can still be found in Bångegård and Sörgård.

At Björkö Huvud there are really peacefull environments left, in a landscape that is breathtakingly beautiful! The road to Bovik (which unfortunately is only open to pedestrian and bicycle traffic) offers tranquility and lovely nature, as well as the opportunity to get up on high mountains with magnificent, wide views. In the spring, you can enjoy a fantastic flora, white anemones, blue anemones, spring onions, cowslips and lily of the valley bloom in the forests. Sheep graze here, there is a rich bird life and plenty of wild animals.

The old community of Bovik dates back to the 1600s and there is an interesting and fascinating history recorded. At the far end of Björkö’s northern cape you will find ”Pjonken”, a very peculiar cobblestone area under old oak trees where in the spring it is completely blue with blue anemones!

But also in the south of the island you will find lovely nature! On the east side, for example, is Suddevik with picturesque jetties and fishing huts, which have been preserved in their original form. Björkö is about 7 km long and at the southern cape, Framnäs, you will find a charming area with old fishing huts.

What is particularly appreciated on Björkö is the large number of trails that run in most areas of the island. You are constantly finding new exciting paths to try and everywhere you see cultural remains from old times. This makes the hike on the island an exciting and captivating experience!

You can get to Björkö  from land by taking a car ferry from Lilla Varholmen. The ferry ride takes 5 minutes and the whole trip from Gothenburg to Björkö about 30 minutes. If you come by sea, there are plenty of good places in the harbor for both large and small boats.
